RALLY ALI CO-DRIVER ALISTAIR MACKAY

Hi, I'm Ally Mackay, the younger, better looking half of the RallyAli Team! Motor sport born and bred, my mum went into labour while watching my dad compete at Doune hill climb. The next few times my dad competed my older brother, Bryan, thought he was going to get another brother each time! My dad, Tommy Mackay, has been involved with many motorsport teams over the years, preparing all sorts of cars for racing and rallying. From a very young age I was went along to whatever events I could and helped out with the prep work and servicing. At the age of 12, I started karting, competing in Junior TKM and progressing to Senior TKM when I turned 16.

At the age of 14, I went as a passenger in the back of Davy Forsyth's MK2 Escort on the Honkers Road Rally. I was smitten and my co-driving career started the following month when my dad and I entered the Jacobite Rally in his MK1 Escort RS1600. We competed in the Highland Car Club championship and most road rallies in the north of Scotland over the next 8 years winning the championship for each class and I won the HCC overall championship in 1999.

During the 90's I helped out with the likes of Jimmy Christie and Malcolm Buchanan where I met John Morrison who was co-driving for Malcolm at the time. John will admit that he wasn't the most organised co-driver in the world! So I used to help out with maps and service routes etc. At the end of 1998 John decided to have a go at driving. He bought a GPN Proton Persona 1600 and asked me to navigate. Our first event was the Border Counties Rally where we finished 21st O/A and won the class.

The following year we did the whole Scottish Championship, winning the class with many top 20 results along the way. At the end of 1999 John bought an ex Hamed Al Wahibi WRC Mitsubishi Evo 4 built and run by Dom Buckley Motorsport. We have competed in this ever since winning the Scottish GPN title and finishing in the top 5 overall on several occasions. In 8 years as a stage rally co-driver I have been in all sorts of cars from Escorts and Mantas to Novas and Metros and sat with drivers such as Bruce McCombie, Robert Sutherland and Malcolm Buchanan.

I first met Alistair Tough at kart meetings and knew him through my brother who has worked for Alistair since he was 16. When I started out as a co-driver, Alistair sold me his race suit as he had retired from driving. This was very much appreciated although there was a fair bit of extra material around the gut area! (sorry Al!). The next time I spoke to Alistair was when he phoned me at the end of 2004 to see if I was free to compete on the Cambrian Rally. I jumped at the chance and although the event didn't go exactly to plan (ended down a bank in Penmachno) we got on well and Alistair asked me to do a few events in 2005.

He was already committed to doing the SRC with Graham Law and I was doing it with John Morrison so we just did a few odd events. We had a few excellent results and built up a good rapour so decided to have a go at the 2006 Ancro Championship in the all new TEG Sport N12.

When I'm not all over the country rallying I earn a living as Circuit Manager at Scotkart ( www.scotkart.co.uk ), Scotland's largest and most successful indoor kart racing centre. I have always been a fairly active person and play quite a lot of football and occasionally compete in athletics events but motor sport has always been my passion. If you want to contact me, email me at alistairmackay2001@yahoo.com or give me a shout if you see me at any rallies.
